Meet Dr. Sumedha Jayasena, the Scientist Behind Stabilicinn

By Stabilicinn

Short answer: Dr. Sumedha Jayasena is a Sri Lankan-born biotechnology scientist who holds over 30 patents worldwide. He combined his culture’s centuries of knowledge about Ceylon cinnamon with modern Western scientific training to bio-engineer the liquid extraction process behind Stabilicinn. He is a co-owner of the company.

Roots in Sri Lanka

Dr. Jayasena grew up in Sri Lanka, immersed in a culture with centuries of knowledge about the health benefits of its local natural resources. Ceylon cinnamon, the island’s most famous export, was one of these ancient Eastern wonders. Over the years he developed both a deep knowledge of it and a belief in its greater potential.

A career in biotechnology

After his scientific education, Dr. Jayasena built a career as a research scientist in biotechnology, earning more than 30 scientific patents worldwide.

Why Ceylon cinnamon?

He knew that this particular type of cinnamon, often called “true cinnamon,” was unlike its common Cassia cousin: it offers superfood benefits but contains negligible amounts of coumarin, which is a blood thinner and a potential liver toxin under long-term use in high concentration. If people were going to use cinnamon every day, he reasoned, it should be Ceylon.

From kitchen spice to precise extract

The challenge was form. Cinnamon powder, whether sprinkled on food or packed into capsules, has to be broken down in several steps before its polyphenols are released. Dr. Jayasena bio-engineered a very precise process to produce a liquid extract of Ceylon cinnamon that retains highly efficacious polyphenolic compounds that are more effectively absorbed into the bloodstream than solid forms. Liquid vs. capsules vs. powder.

Stabilicinn today

Stabilicinn was originally made primarily for sale in Vitamin Shoppe’s 700+ stores nationwide. Today, it is being re-introduced directly to consumers and made in small batches in the USA. Dr. Jayasena remains a co-owner.
